Present Box: Ubuntu

June 17 – June 29, 2014
Sabin Aell
Daughter Cells Dance

For their Present Box exhibition, Sabin Aell, Candess Giyan, and Daughter Cells Dance turned BMoCA’s lounge into Ubuntu, an immersive art installation and stage for a series of interactive performances. The term "Ubuntu" refers to a need for human kindness and the belief in a universal bond, or an unspoken truth, of sharing that connects all humanity. The work critiques our society’s collective tendencies toward over-saturation and desensitization. It provided a vehicle for both viewer and performer to connect through a multiplicity of expressive art forms: dance, costume-design, visual installation, spoken text, and, perhaps most importantly, breath. For each performance the viewer enters a live art field as an active participant. Ubuntu is the coming together of witness and performer in a process that creates impact though the momentary presence of each individual in the shared space of BMoCA.

"What if...?" A collaborative show between Direct-Connect Denver and Neurotitan in Berlin

53 artists from Denver and 53 artists from Berlin collaborating on a question asked to each other visually starting with "What if...?"

This is Sabin Aell's piece before and after it was sent to Berlin for the show to her collaborating artist Jim Avignon. Aell created the work out of transparent polyethylene film cut into various shapes, drawn onto with black ink and attached to each other with blue yarn. The question was from him to her was:

"What if you could erase all bad memories and replace them with anything you want?"

MOND:SEE new work in resin by Sabin Aell

58 pages

This book documents the last body of work of Denver artist Sabin Aell. For this work Aell layered translucent polyethylene film into resin which included pigment prints with shadows of floral arrangements. Most pieces end up with at least 10 layers of resin on top of each other. The layers of resin create a subtle three dimensional-reality and is very time consuming to produce.

See, preview and order a copy of the book on Blurb.com.

MOND:SEE, clear resin mixed media installation resin, polyethylene film, ink, acrylic, aluminum

"Denver artist Sabin Aell and gallerist Bobbi Walker have the sort of relationship that we all benefit from. Aell's ethereal output tends to look very good in Walker's airy and spacious rooms. That makes the artist's exhibition of mixed-media works and video installations a natural something to look forward to."

KOKKI-DO

LAUNCHPAD MISSION 2 - LAND
at the Wittemyer Ranch, JUNE 22, 2-7pm, for one day only

30 artists were invited by Petra Sertic and Alvin R. Greforio to participate. Sabin Aell was collaborating with Norman Broomhall who designed the sound for this elaborate installation. Aell performed energy work with around 45 people of the audience during 4 hours that afternoon.

The installation was created out of rubber tubes, edged with glow in the dark tape; paper-drawings dipped into wax and sewn together with glow in the dark string; tire wire, 2 rubber chairs and blue chalk.
